Florida Deputies Shot Responding to Deadly Naval Base Attack

A gunman opened fire at Naval Air Station Pensacola in Florida on Friday morning in an attack that left four people dead, including the assailant, law enforcement officials report. Two Escambia County Sheriff’s Office deputies were wounded in an exchange of fire with the gunman.

Law enforcement officials said deputies with the Sheriff’s Office “negated the threat."

The two deputies who were wounded are expected to recover, News4Jax reports. One was shot in the arm and one was shot in the knee, officials said. 11 people total were shot in the incident.

During a 2 p.m. press conference, law enforcement officials declined to identify the suspected shooter but confirmed he was a Saudi aviation student and member of the Saudi Air Force training at Naval Air Station in Pensacola.

The investigators are looking into whether it was terror-related, but it is early in the probe.

Law enforcement officials said the shooter used a handgun. The shooter was not authorized to have a weapon on base.
