An officer struck by gunfire earlier has been treated and released at an area hospital.
“He appears to be in good health, but with severe bruising. The vest did its job, but it’s still a pretty painful injury,” explains Kee.
The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office says officers responded to the report of the burglary of a home around 10:50 p.m. Sunday. The two responding officers were ambushed by an armed suspect and one officer was struck by gunfire but was able to return fire.
The burglary suspect took a vehicle and fled from police, but the pursuit came to an end when he crashed on the Dames Point Bridge.
According to witnesses, the man then jumped from the bridge into the St. Johns River.
Police have identified the deceased suspect as Charlie Brown, 37.
Kee, in an early morning press conference said it was unclear if the suspect had been hit by return fire from the officers, but blood was found inside the wrecked car following the pursuit.
