A school resource deputy in Florida confronted a teen who brought a gun to school and then deployed an electronic control weapon (ECW) when the student tried to flee the officer. The SRO found a 9mm handgun in the student’s backpack.

"Bringing a weapon onto a school campus is not only illegal but endangers the lives of students and staff and will not be tolerated in Hillsborough County," said Sheriff Chad Chronister. "This incident could have resulted in far more dangerous consequences. We are committed to ensuring that our schools remain safe environments for everyone."

The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office reported one of its school resource deputies received a tip from the school administration at 1:47 p.m. Monday that a student had brought a gun to Armwood High School.

When the deputy approached the 14-year-old and told him to drop his backpack, the student ignored commands and tried to flee down the hallway.

At that point, the deputy used an ECW to stop the teen and then took him into custody.

When the teen’s backpack was searched, the deputy found a Sig Sauer 9mm handgun.

The boy was taken to the hospital for medical clearance before being transferred to the Juvenile Assessment Center and, according to the sheriff’s office, is facing charges of possession of a firearm on school property and resisting an officer without violence.
