Fired Illinois Deputy Charged with First-Degree Murder Over On-Duty Shooting
Sean Grayson was indicted on charges of first-degree murder, aggravated battery with a firearm and official misconduct.
A Sangamon County, Illinois, grand jury on Wednesday returned a five-count indictment against a Sangamon County Sheriff's Deputy in the July 6 fatal shooting of 36-year-old Sonya Massey in her home following a 911 call reporting a possible intruder.
Sean Grayson, 30, a count of first-degree murder, along with two other charges, CBS News reports.
Sangamon County State's Attorney John Milhiser said his office will file a petition to detain Grayson in accordance with the Pre-Trial Fairness Act.
Grayson and another deputy, who has not been named, were dispatched to Massey's home in in an unincorporated area of Woodside Township, around 12:50 a.m. on July 6.
Prosecutors said Grayson "aggressively yelled" at Massey to put a pot down and then she put her hands in the air, declared "I'm sorry" and ducked for cover before being shot in the face. Grayson also discouraged the other deputy from getting his medical kit, prosecutors said.
"The other deputy still rendered aid and stayed with Ms. Massey until medical help arrived," First Assistant State's Attorney Mary Rodgers wrote. Grayson "at no time attempted to render aid to Ms. Massey," the State Journal Register reports.
Grayson was indicted on charges of first-degree murder, aggravated battery with a firearm and official misconduct.
Sheriff Jack Campbell said Grayson has been fired.
