City officials announced Monday a plan to boost salaries by 4% for sworn Detroit police officers, increase starting pay, and extend labor contracts for the department's three unions, reports the Detroit Free Press.
Mayor Mike Duggan and Police Chief James Craig held a news conference this morning to make the announcement, which they hope will help efforts to recruit and retain officers.
The affected 2,224 officers are those represented by the Detroit Police Officers Association, the Detroit Police Lieutenants and Sergeants Association, and the Detroit Police Command Officers Association.
Starting officers will receive a bump in pay from $31,700 to $36,000, Duggan said, adding that he hopes it will put more officers on the street. Both wage increases will be effective Jan. 1, the mayor said. The officers would then see another 2.5% increase in each of the following two years and a 3% percent bump on July 1, 2019, according to the collective bargaining proposal.
