“Unprovoked, the man armed with an ax did swing at the officer,” Araz Alali, a spokesman for the D.C. Police department told the
Washington Post
. “He ambushed a police officer. This was not direct enforcement. This was completely unprovoked.”
The man fled on foot westbound in an alley towards the 1200 block of Quincy Street NE, police said. The ax was recovered and was “being processed,” Alali said.
Full details of the injuries were not immediately given, but police described them as not life-threatening.
