The Dallas Police Department honored 93 officers that died on the job during the department’s annual memorial service for fallen officers Tuesday.

"They knew the inherent danger of putting on this uniform, doing this work, answering their calling," says Dallas Police Chief Eddie Garcia. "They embarked bravely into the darkness. They did it every day, putting the needs of others ahead of their own. These officers, they stand for everything that is right. We can only hope to live up to the standard of service they have set for us."

Family members of most of the fallen officers were in attendance, including Erique Samarripa. His son Patricio Samarripa was one of the officers killed during the July 7, 2016 ambush that killed five officers and injured nine others.

“It’s like it happened yesterday. I still feel hurt and sad,” Enrique Samarripa tells 5NBC.

“There isn’t a day that goes by that we do not think of the brave officers who gave their lives in the line of duty. We will never forget their sacrifice, their service,” the department states in a social media post.
