Dallas Officer Shot, Saved by Body Armor

A Dallas police officer who was shot Thursday was saved from serious injury by his body armor Police Chief Eddie Garcia said Monday.

Garcia said officers Derek Williams and Christopher Mazin were responding to a call at about 1:25 p.m. when they spotted a man shooting into a truck in front of a gas station. A man in the truck was killed, NBC DFW reports.

Williams pulled their patrol vehicle into the parking lot and drove back to where the shooting took place. As the officers got out of their vehicle, the man began firing at them, hitting the patrol car as he drove away, police say.

The officers got back into their vehicle and chased the man who did a U-turn and was headed back toward the officers. Williams stopped the patrol vehicle and the officers got out where they again exchanged gunfire with the man.

During this second exchange of gunfire, Williams was shot in his vest as the man drove past them. He was treated and released at a local hospital.

A suspect is in custody.
