A Montgomery County (Md.) Police Department officer committed suicide after leading a Maryland trooper on a high-speed pursuit on Monday.

The trooper pulled over Jed R. Bylsma, 30, on westbound U.S. 50 in Talbot County about 1:30 a.m., for speeding. Bylsma identified himself as an officer but showed signs of intoxication, reports the Baltimore Sun .

After Bylsma fled, troopers pursued him until they caught up with his vehicle, which had stopped after a successful deployment of stop sticks. They found him unresponsive with a handgun near his hand. Bylsma had been on administrative leave for about one year, police told 9News Now .
