Officers coordinated with Colorado Parks and Wildlife but wildlife officers had a long travel time to the scene. Greeley officers tried to contain the mountain lion, and the department issued a reverse 911 CodeRed alert advising people in the area to shelter in place.
“Every attempt was made to prioritize both the animal's and our residents' safety. When the mountain lion attempted to break out of the containment area, and it became apparent public safety could no longer be assured, an officer discharged their weapon to protect the community. The Greeley Police officer acted in an abundance of caution, particularly given the close proximity of children and families in the area,” police said.
No civilians or officers were injured during the incident.
