Rookie Chicago Police officers have begun patrolling the city's most dangerous neighborhoods in a new crime-fighting strategy introduced by Superintendent Garry McCarthy.

The officers recently completed 12 weeks of field training after completing a six-month police academy. Additional officers will be assigned to what McCarthy has identified as "impact zones" in the most crime-ridden neighborhoods, reports the Chicago Tribune .

"One of the philosophies ... that we've adopted is what I like to call a return to community policing," McCarthy told the Tribune. "And in this case, it's the same officers in the same zones every single night."
