Chicago Officer Saved by Ballistic Vest in Shooting

An officer with the Chicago Police Department is alive and recovering from non-life-threatening injuries after he was struck by gunfire that was stopped by his ballistic vest.

According to the Chicago Sun-Times , officers were responding to a domestic dispute when an armed subject opened fire, striking the 30-year-old officer—who has been with the department for a year and a half—at least once.

The officer—whose name has not been released—was transported to a nearby hospital where he is listed in good condition.

After the shooting, the alleged gunman retreated into a dwelling where other responding officers eventually apprehended and arrested him.

The subject—identified only as a 33-year-old male—remains in custody.

Charges are pending.
