Chicago police officer Thor Soderberg was disarmed by a 24-year-old man who grabbed his gun, shot him in the head, and then used the gun in a robbery attempt nearby, the Chicago Tribune reports.

Soderberg, 43, was working a detail dedicated to addressing youth violence, when he was jumped outside a facility used by targeted response and gang enforcement units.

He was walking to a parking lot when he got into a struggle with the man, who eventually shot the 11-year veteran, according to Assistant Superintendent James Jackson.

The man then tried to rob someone at gunpoint a short distance away. Officers from the facility heard shots fired and exchanged gunfire with the suspect and shot him.

The suspect's condition is reported as stable and his wounds non-life-threatening.

"This neighborhood is exactly what it is, it's wild," neighbor Cheri Ricardo told the Tribune. "That police station in my opinion did not stop any immediate crime in this neighborhood."

She said gang members in the area are "bad and bold, they do not care and have no respect or anything. They still shoot up and down the street when they want to."
