Independent auditors will examine every case investigated by a former Charlotte-Mecklenburg police department detective who admitted throwing away notes in the high-profile murder case of a man accused in the killing of two police officers.
Arvin Fant, a 12-year veteran, admitted in court last week that he threw away notes in Demeatrius Montgomery’s case, on trial for the killing of two officers in 2007. The defense said those notes contained evidence of a possible second suspect in the slayings.
On Monday, CMPD spokesman Capt. Brian Cunningham said every case Fant was a lead detective on is under scrutiny. The independent review panel will be headed by retired Mecklenburg County Judge Shirley Fulton and retired internal affairs investigators and supervisors, Cunningham said.
