Cash-Strapped Detroit Asks for State Police Help

Detroit's Mayor Dave Bing has asked for help from the Michigan State Police and suburban sheriff's departments for the city's annual June 25 fireworks show.

Bing said the other agencies have agreed to send deputies and reservists to help patrol downtown for the 54th annual Target Fireworks event.

The event brings hundreds of thousands of spectators to the Detroit Riverfront and downtown rooftops, from across metro Detroit and southeast Michigan. Crowds also pack the riverfront in Windsor across the river in Ontario, reports the Detroit Free-Press .
