According to the San Jose Mercury News , Tyler Dominguez was recounting the story of his birth 27 years ago when Lieutenant Chris Cano's interest was piqued.
Cano had delivered 13 babies when he worked as a paramedic in the San Gabriel Valley before joining the El Monte Police Department.
As Cano heard details of Dominguez's birth—especially the detail that the newborn's life was at stake because his umbilical cord was wrapped around his neck—he realized that he was the man who freed the infant from peril.
