California lawmakers are getting behind a law initiated by the Los Angeles Police chief and mayor in response to an officer-involved shooting that left a teenager paralyzed.

The Senate Public Safety Committee approved the legislation Tuesday that was sought by LAPD's Chief Charlie Beck and Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa. In December, an officer shot a 13-year-old boy who pulled out a replica Beretta 92F after officers ordered him to surrender.
