California State University San Bernardino police fatally shot a bipolar graduate student outside his apartment Saturday, after he fought with authorities in a brawl that lasted up to 10 minutes.

Throughout the day, police officers were summoned to 38-year-old Bartholomew Williams' apartment, which he shared with three other male students. He was behaving erratically, reports the Press Enterprise. When three officers arrived at Williams' residence for a third time to take him into custody for psychological evaluation, he grappled for an officer's baton, grabbed and used pepper spray and kicked an officer in the head.

The two remaining authorities, believing their partners was in danger of great bodily harm or death, fired a total of five bullets. Campus police are not equipped with TASERs, according to the Press Enterprise.

Williams' mother told officials that her son had been off his bipolar disorder medication for at least a week.
