A Salinas, CA, police officer was killed Friday night in a traffic stop shooting, CBS San Francisco reports.
Officer Jorge David Alvarado, 30, conducted the traffic stop around 10:41 p.m. Friday, according to Salinas police Chief Roberto Filice. The suspect reportedly opened fire, and Filice said Officer Alvarado shot back.
“The officer stayed in the fight to the end and paid the ultimate price,” Filice said during a noon press conference Saturday.
His accused killer, identified as Gustavo Morales, somehow showed up at Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital with a gunshot wound after the incident and forced the hospital to go in lockdown for three hours Friday night, KSBW reports.
A source with the Monterey County Jail told KION that the suspect is Morales is 31.
Morales faces charges of murder and discharging a firearm causing great bodily injury or death to a peace officer.
