Boston Police Union Says Some Officers Have Worked 24 Hours Straight

There is a push to hire more police officers in Boston after the city’s police union claimed more than 100 officers worked double shifts and five were forced to work triple shifts — 24 hours straight — this past weekend.

“Triples, that’s something that really shouldn’t exist,” said Boston Police Patrolmen’s Association President Larry Calderone.

Calderone said the union wants Mayor Michelle Wu to either hire as many as 500 more officers to the Boston Police Department or reduce the number of events being held in the city, WCVB reports.

“We do not allow nurses, truck drivers, pilots — pretty much any profession — you’re not allowed to work 24 hours a day,” Calderone said. “So where or who would think it’s OK to have a police officer carrying a firearm working 24 hours straight? It’s unacceptable.”
