Boston Officer Shot at Domestic, Saved by Vest

A man was charged Tuesday in the shooting of a Boston police officer, who suffered non-life-threatening injuries when he responded to a domestic incident in Dorchester. The officer was wearing armor.

Police officers who responded to the scene arrested 31-year-old Avery Lewis, of Dorchester, and recovered a gun at the scene, officials said.

During Lewis' arraignment Tuesday, prosecutors said officers were called to the scene by a woman who said Lewis, the father of her child, was outside with a gun, WCVB reports.

Prosecutors said Lewis led police on a foot chase, and as an officer was trying to place Lewis in custody, a gun went off, striking the officer, who was wearing a ballistic vest and not seriously injured.
