An Atlanta Police officer rushing to the aid of a fellow officer who had been shot in the face said he struck the suspect with his service pistol because he feared for his life, reports the Associated Press.
Police arrested 20-year-old Frank Nance on Jan. 11 shortly after rookie Officer Reginald Robinson was shot in the face. Nance reportedly suffered a seizure after Officer Andre Bent struck him with the pistol.
In a police report obtained by the AP, Officer Bent wrote that when he confronted Nance, the suspect raised his left hand.
"I then felt scared for my life and for my fellow officers on the scene. So therefore having fear for my life I then came up with my service weapon and hit the suspect in the face," Bent wrote. "As a result my service weapon accidentally discharged once toward the sky."
