Arkansas, Alabama Officers Honored by Columbia Southern University
The Outstanding Law Enforcement Professional Award was established as part of National Crime Prevention Month (October) and to recognize CSU’s criminal justice students and graduates for their commitment to safety, professionalism and their accomplishments in the field.
Columbia Southern University (CSU) has recognized Deputy Chief Jason Thompson of the Fort Smith (AR) Police Department as its 2022 Outstanding Law Enforcement Professional. Thompson, who has been with the department since 2006, was noted for his dedication, awards and love of the community.
“The thing I enjoy most about my work is having the ability to help people. I also like to interact with people to show them that police officers are regular people that face some of the same issues as anyone else,” said Thompson, who was selected Fort Smith Police Department Officer of the Year 2012, Fort Smith Jaycees Officer of the Year 2013 and Fort Smith Noon Exchange Club Officer of the Year 2013.
The university also selected an Outstanding Law Enforcement Professional runner-up, Patrol Sgt. Shelby Dockery of the Jasper (AL) Police Department. Dockery was recognized for his training efforts, specifically his desire to promote learning Spanish to his co-workers.
”I decided to promote Spanish learning to my co-workers because we have a significant portion of our population that speaks limited English. Communication is one of the most important parts of our jobs, and active listening efforts are hindered when cultural or other obstacles are present,” he said. He hopes to have a proposal in place for the department next year. Dockery has won several awards and is also an active member of the Patrolmen's Benevolent Association.
Both Thompson and Dockery are students at CSU.
The Outstanding Law Enforcement Professional Award was established as part of National Crime Prevention Month (October) and to recognize CSU’s criminal justice students and graduates for their commitment to safety, professionalism and their accomplishments in the field.
