Arizona Police Partner with Drug Counselors in Effort to Combat Opioid Crisis
Police in Pima County, AZ, have received a $1.4 million grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, as part of a collaboration aimed at taking a more holistic approach to dealing with people addicted to opioids.
Police in Pima County, AZ, have received a $1.4 million grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, as part of a collaboration between the county, the Pima County Sheriff’s Department, Tucson Police Department, Codac Health Recovery and Wellness, the University of Arizona Southwest Institute for Research on Women, Arizona Superior Court Pretrial Services and Cenpatico, according to Tuscon.com.
The grant will pay for two peer navigators to serve within the Tucson Police Department's Mental Health Support Team and follow up with people post-overdose or post-deflection to make sure they’re keeping up with their treatment.
Dubbed the U-MATTER Project, the effort is intended to take a more holistic approach to dealing with people addicted to opioids.
