Arizona Governor Vetoes Campus Carry Bill

Arizona's Gov. Jan Brewer vetoed a bill that would allow guns on college campuses, as well as a bill mandating proof of U.S. citizenship to run for president. Brewer said she vetoed the campus gun bill because it was "poorly written."

Brewer, in an announcement late Monday, said the gun bill failed to define "public rights of way" and the inclusion of state schools, where firearms are currently prohibited by federal and state laws, Reuters reports.

Two years ago, Brewer was a featured speaker at a National Rifle Association conference, the Arizona Daily Sun reports. She has also signed every piece of legislation in previous years expanding gun rights, including a measure last year that permits anyone to carry a concealed weapon, with or without training or a background check. Brewer said that this new bill, however, was too much.

Arizona Sen. Steve Gallardo, a Democrat, told Reuters that Brewer vetoed the bills because they would be bad for the state's image.
