Alabama Officer Wounded in Shooting That Killed Sergeant Leaves Hospital
At least one of the suspects opened fire, mortally wounding Sgt. Carter and critically wounding Allums, police say. Officers returned fire and one of the suspects was wounded. He remains hospitalized in custody and is reportedly paralyzed.

Birmingham, AL, police have identified the North Precinct officer who was critically wounded in the shooting that killed his sergeant earlier this month.
Officer Lucas Allums, 27, was released from the hospital this week after spending nine days in UAB Hospital’s ICU following the Jan. 13 shooting. Sgt. Wytasha Carter, 44, was killed in the incident.
Police were working a special detail targeting car break-ins in downtown Birmingham. Allums spotted at least two suspects who appeared to be trying door handles to see if they were unlocked outside of the 4 Seasons Bar and Grill. The officer called for backup, and the sergeant arrived, AL.com reports.
