Ala. Teen Arrested for School Bomb Plot

A Russell County, Ga., teenager faces charges of felony attempted assault after authorities discovered his plan to carry out an explosive attack on his high school.

Derek Shrout, 17, detailed in his journal a plot to use homemade devices to bomb classmates. One of his teachers discovered the notebook in her classroom and contacted administrators who turned Shrout over to authorities, the  Huffington Post  reports.

In his plans, Shrout, who described himself as a white supremacist, identified six students and one instructor by name that he planned to attack. Of those students listed in the journal, five are black, the  Columbus Ledger-Enquirer  reports.

Upon searching his home, police found Shrout had prepared several dozen homemade grenades, as well as dozens of tobacco containers filled with shrapnel and drilled with holes for fuses.

Police believe the  Sandy Hook school shooting  played a role in Shrout's plans because the first date in his journal describing the plan was Dec. 17—three days after the incident. A judge has set Shrout's bond at $75,000.
