A San Antonio police officer was injured and a gunman was killed in a gunfight on Thursday morning.
Police had been called about reports of an active shooter, randomly firing shots as he walked surface streets in the city.
According to the San Antonio Express-News, officers came upon the man, who then reportedly pointed his gun in their direction and began shooting. Officers then opened fire, fatally wounding the man.
San Antonio Police Chief William McManus said that shell casings were found up and down the street for blocks.
"It was important that he was stopped quickly because of the potential for someone else to be shot, and the officers displayed a lot of courage by closing the distance on him to try to bring this to an end, and they put themselves in danger by doing so," McManus said.
The injured officer was treated and released from a nearby hospital after shattered glass struck him in the face.
