A 20-year-old Florida State University Student shot eight people—two fatally—near the student union Thursday morning around 11:50 a.m. The suspect was also shot.
The deceased victims were described by law enforcement as non-students. Six more victims were wounded or injured and hospitalized. They are reportedly in fair condition.
The suspect was shot and wounded by Florida State University Police who arrived immediately on the scene. He was taken into custody and is hospitalized. No officers were injured.
Tallahassee Police Chief Lawrence Revell said in a press conference that the suspect was shot when he did not comply with FSU police orders to surrender.
There is not indication of a motive for the attack, as the suspect has chosen not to speak with law enforcement, Revell said.
Leon County Sheriff Walt McNeil said the suspect has been identified as the son of a deputy who has served with his agency for 18 years.
The suspect reportedly used a handgun that belonged to his mother and was her retired duty weapon. He also reportedly had a shotgun during the attack, but officials say there is no evidence that he fired it.
Chief Revell thanked all of the public safety agencies, including law enforcement, fire, and emergency medical that “seamlessly” responded to the attack. “I am proud of the response and horrified by the act,” he said.
FSU Police Chief Jason Trumbower praised the bravery of his officers for immediately engaging and neutralizing the shooter.
