5 MA Officers Injured Apprehending Knife-Wielding Suspect

Five Taunton, MA, police officers, including the chief were stabbed or otherwise injured Tuesday evening during a bizarre incident inside a local residence. One of the officers was seriously wounded in the attack.

The incident began with a driver shouting from the window of his vehicle at officers who were conducting a traffic stop that did not involve him. The same vehicle—a 2010 Honda Accord—was spotted minutes later by another officer and it was being driven in a reckless manner, police told WCVB .

The officer stopped the Accord. But the driver drove off, police say.

A vehicle pursuit ensued. Police say the pursuit ended with the suspect crashing his vehicle into a home and running inside.

Officers went after the man. Inside the house two of them were slashed with a knife. One was so badly wounded that he was airlifted to a Boston hospital, police say. His injuries have been described as non-life-threatening.

Taunton Police Chief Edward Walsh, who lives nearby, responded to the scene from his home. The suspect also swung his knife at Walsh, resulting in a puncture wound to the chief's torso, according to authorities.

Chief Walsh Tasered the man, and he was taken into custody.

Two more officers were injured in the arrest.

The suspect reportedly has a history of mental health issues.
