SEARCHFour police officers, a firefighter, and 10 others were injured in a gas-line-related explosion Thursday that caused the collapse of a multi-family building in Wappingers Falls, New York.
A Thursday gas explosion in the Village of Wappingers Falls, New York, injured at least 15 people, including four police officers.
Injured first responders included one firefighter and four police officers, Wappingers Falls Police Commissioner Paul Italiano said at a news conference. The other injured parties were eight adults and two children, reports CNN.
Officials declared a mass casualty incident, reports Mid Hudson News, following the explosion that occurred about 12:20 p.m.
Officials said Central Hudson contractors were performing routine maintenance replacing gas lines when they struck a 3/4-inch gas service line, reports ABC7, causing a fire and explosion. The explosion caused the collapse of a multifamily building with four apartments in a row.
At least one heavy equipment operator was trapped in his machine and first responders, along with the specialized rescue team from the Poughkeepsie, Arlington, and LaGrange Fire Departments worked to reach the man.
