The incident began as an attempted carjacking and evolved into an attempted robbery involving the same victim. The attempted robbery occurred inside a Shake Shack restaurant and the off-duty detective exchanged fire with the suspects. The detective was wounded in the gunfight and the suspects fled.
The wounded 37-year-old detective, who has seven years of experience, was in stable condition Friday, Milwaukee police told the Journal-Sentinel .
