My Lucky Day
Often we think that something that happens to us is a matter of bad luck, yet it changes things so much that it becomes good luck! An example is the day I was "killed." It was my senior summer, and I was driving a tanker in the Coconino National Forest looking for a small fire that one of the towers had picked up following a thunderstorm. It was extremely rugged terrain, and we could find no way to drive to the site of the fire.

Federal Liability for Vehicle Pursuits
Any officer who's been involved in a vehicle pursuit that resulted in property damage, bodily injury, or death should be concerned with at least three levels of liability. Departmental discipline may be imposed if the pursuit violates agency policy. Tort liability may be imposed through a lawsuit filed in state court. And plaintiffs may file a federal civil rights lawsuit seeking damages.

Atlanco/Tru-Spec Tactical Response Uniform
If your agency is in the market for new tactical uniforms, check out Atlanco/Tru-Spec Tactical Response Uniforms or "TRU." Tru-Spec gear is high quality and affordably priced. I know several soldiers who have worn the Tru-Spec ACUs, and they have found them to hold up better than the Army issue.

Glock G21SF Semi-Automatic Pistol
Most officers who carry Glock pistols will know exactly what I mean when I say that the new Glock G21SF is "...just a Glock." But such flippancy should in no way be taken as a negative comment because one of the line's most positive features is that once you know how to use one Glock, you know how to use all of them.

Two-and-a-Half Shapes to Counter Any Attack
When defending yourself, you should also be on the offensive. To do this successfully, all you need are two-and-a-half shapes to counter any attack. You probably think I'm joking at this point, but bear with me. Remember, especially as a police officer, an attack could happen anywhere or at any time. You might be totally caught by surprise or prepared. If you have the right technique, none of these things should matter.

Shots Fired: Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio 06•11•2004
There are times when you have to take your time on a call. Times when you have to wait for backup, develop a well-coordinated game plan, and arrange for logistical and tactical support before you take action. But when a nine-year-old calls 911 and says that his daddy has just shot and killed his mommy and is coming for him, that isn't one of them.

Electric Bullet
Creating the XREP wasn't easy. It required an arduous process of trial and error and many trips back to the drawing board for re-engineering and redesign before TASER could overcome all of the obstacles necessary to build a 12-gauge munition that carries the charge of an X26.

Investigating Gangs Outside the Gang Squad
I remember riding with another L.A. Deputy Sheriff in an East Los Angeles gang car in 1975. To me, it was a privilege working with a special gang suppression unit, but my partner complained that he hated working gangs because it was useless. But he was wrong.

Summer-Friendly Uniforms
While civilians might whine about rising temperatures, they at least have the option of wearing shorts and a T-shirt with a pair of sandals to beat the summer heat. Police officers must wear a uniform, boots, and a stifling ballistic vest. Yet despite the limitations of regulations on duty, lighter clothing is an option, even if you're not a bicycle cop.

Fit and Clean for Life
Your soft body armor always stands at the ready to help save your life. And next to your duty weapon, it's the most important piece of equipment that you have on the job. Yet, many of you are unfamiliar with how to best make sure your vests fit properly and, also, how proper fit affects not only your comfort but also the protection the armor provides. Sadly, even fewer of you fully understand how to best care for your vests to get the best protection and longest service from them.

Are TASERs Really Non-Lethal?
With more than 45 percent of law enforcement agencies nationwide now using conducted electrical weapon (CEW) devices, agencies and the general public are becoming more familiar with the capabilities of and controversy surrounding these non-lethal weapons. The latest research conducted on animals and humans indicates that CEWs are among the safest of weapon options

How to Respond to Excited Delirium
Because you, as law enforcement officers, are often required to control subjects in various stages of agitation, it is important for you to understand that some of these subjects will be in a state of extreme physiologic stress. This state is often called "excited or agitated delirium."
