During a traffic stop in Hampton on Jan. 11, 2023, Deputy Chambers, who’s also an investigator on the U.S. Marshals Task Force, was trying to arrest Lamont Lewis for allegedly killing his wife on Christmas Day.

When Lewis got out of the car, he started firing at task force agents and they returned fire, according to Hampton Police Chief Mark Talbot.

Lewis and Chambers were struck during the exchange of gunfire. Lewis was killed and Chambers was critically wounded, WTVR reports.

The U.S. Marshals Service reports that Chapman was shot three times in the exchange of fire.

As a certified EMT, Chambers applied his own tourniquet to stem the bleeding after returning fire, the Marshals Service said on Facebook .

“The courage and tenacity it takes to perform this too often perilous work is a testament to not only Scott but to all of our Deputies and Task Force Officers,” the Marshals Service said during the recent presentation of the agency’s Purple Heart medal.

Scott Chambers is a hero,” said Chesapeake Sheriff Jim O’Sullivan. “He puts on his badge every day to go out and get the worst of the worst off the streets.”
