Portland Police Bureau Chief of Police Chuck Lovell announced that he is stepping down Wednesday.

Lovell will move into leading the Police Bureau’s community engagement efforts, KPTV reports.

“Chief Lovell has led the Bureau through unprecedented times with a steady and reliable hand,” Mayor Ted Wheeler said. “He has nothing but my support, admiration, and gratitude for his service.”

Lovell’s resignation as Chief of Police will become effective Oct. 11. Wheeler announced a selection has also been made for Interim Chief with former Deputy Chief Robert Day stepping in. Day held the second in command position under former Chief Danielle Outlaw, in 2018 until his retirement in 2019.
