VIDEO: Taking a Strong Stance

Mixed martial arts has become a fast and rising sport, with Muay Thai, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and wrestling being just a few of the popular techniques used by the fighters.

With this in mind, POLICE Magazine has teamed up with The MMA Lab in Glendale, Ariz., to offer a series of training videos demonstrating defensive tactics officers may need to use.

The purpose of these videos is to show officers how these techniques not only apply to fighters in the octagon, but how they can be applied in the law enforcement world.

The techniques shown in each video are basic strikes, kicks, and escape or submission-type moves. They will be demonstrated by two of the best instructors in the MMA world. John Crouch and Adam Gillespey have years of experience training and coaching professional fighters as well as training various law enforcement agencies and military personnel. Crouch is The Lab's head Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu instructor, while Gillespey is a Muay Thai instructor.

The purpose of these videos is not to replace any formalized training officers have received from their departments. These are basic "tools" officers can use if they ever find themselves in a situation where the training they have received is not applicable.

In the initial video, Gillespey demonstrates how to take a strong defensive stance.

Ron Dorfman is a veteran officer with 16 years of service with an Arizona law enforcement agency.
