SHOT Show 2011: Kel-Tec Gives More Details On KSG Shotgun

A closer look at the Kel-Tec KSG, courtesy of a company engineer who disassembled it for POLICE Magazine.

In what may be the most closely watched weapon introduction at SHOT Show 2011, Kel-Tec unveiled its 14-round, 12 gauge shotgun on Tuesday to a near feeding frenzy at the company's booth.

Kel-Tec engineers gave demos of the KSG (Kel-Tec Shotgun) that may not look out of place in a sci-fi movie because of its unique design. The company had announced the weapon earlier in the month.

At the Kel-Tec booth, company engineers acknowledged the weapon's similarity to the NeoStead 2000 (NS2000), a combat shotgun produced by South African firearms maker Truvelo beginning in 2001.

The NeoStead's dual six-round magazine tubes feed from above the barrel (compared with the Kel-Tec's below-barrel tubes), and a selector switch can be set to feed rounds from left, right or alternating between the tubes.

The Kel-Tec KSG allows the operator seven rounds from each tube, which would allow a tactical unit to load rifled slugs in one tube for dynamic entries and buck shells in the second tube for use once inside a building.

Currently, the KSG's selector switch's center position blocks feeding, allowing the operator to clear the chamber or manually load shells. A Kel-Tec design engineer told POLICE Magazine the company is considering altering the design to allow alternative feeding.

The gun is currently a prototype, and Kel-Tec plans to put it into production in the third quarter of 2011. It will be initially offered with a black finish, and later OD Green and Coyote Tan. The retail price has been set at $880.
