K-9 History: Riverside (Calif.) PD
Riverside (Calif.) Police Officer Loren Mitchell became the first officer in his agency to work with a police dog when he was partnered up with "PAL" in 1958. Chief Sergio Diaz and the City Council honored the now-retired Officer Mitchell for this historical achievement at a City Hall ceremony. The photo gallery includes an apprehension the pair made during a 1950s traffic stop.

Attendees to the POLICE-TREXPO 2011 conference in Chantilly, Va., from Aug. 10-12 had the chance to hear Lt. Col. Dave Grossman give the keynote, "The Bulletproof Mind: Psychological and Physiological Preparation for Combat." They were also able to take advantage of a pair of defensive-tactics traing sessions, including Al Giusto's techniques for disarming suspects armed with edged weapons. Range Night included an instructional session from Chris Cerino of "Top Shot" fame.

Motorola's Connected Patrol Car
Motorola Solutions unveiled its concept of a next-generation patrol vehicle at a July press event that brings many new communications capabilities to field officers. Motorola's Chevy Caprice includes an LTE broadband modem, steering wheel controls for radio communication, and voice-command technology. Video processing technology optimizes in-car video streaming into and out of the vehicle.

Shots Fired: Tulsa, Okla., The Alley
Tulsa K-9 Officer Steve Downie was summononed to a dark alley about a mile from a fast-food restaurant that had been robbed on June 10, 1996. Officer Downie and Officer Dick Hobson began searching the alley on foot, when muzzle blasts lighted up the area. Suspect Steven Williams, 21, had engaged officers with a shotgun, firing from a darkened corner in front of a steel plate (visible on the right). 2011 Dodge Charger Pursuit
Law enforcement agencies such as the Boise (Idaho) Police Department have opted for Chrysler's 2011 Dodge Charger Pursuit as their new patrol car to replace the Crown Vic being phased out by Ford this year. Rather than introduce a new model, Chrysler opted to upgrade its existing Charger. For the 2011 model year, Chrysler added a Pentastar V-6 engine option and added electronic stability control to the suspension for better handling during higher-speed pursuits. Police Week 2011: Candlelight Vigil
The 2011 candlelight vigil during National Police Week in Washington, D.C., drew up to 20,000 officers, police survivors, dignitaries, and other law enforcement supporters to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial for the reading of 316 names added to the wall this year. The vigil is organized by the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund (NLEOMF).

To honor their sacrifice, the names of 316 law enforcement officers were engraved onto the marble walls of the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial. The men and women who served their communities as officers, deputies, troopers and agents were honored during National Police Week, and well-wishers came to pay homage to their memories by leaving notes, photos, duty gear and other personal items. Vintage Patrol: 1968 Dodge Coronet
Ted Saraf's strong memories of his rolling office as a young officer with the Pasadena (Calif.) Police Department led him to Texas in 2008 to find and restore the object of his affection—a 1968 Dodge Coronet. Saraf purchased the vehicle via eBay, and set out to lovingly restore it to how he remembered it during its service days in the late 1960s and '70s. Saraf brought the vehicle to the 2011 Police Fleet Expo to show attendees his finished work.

Ford P.I. Utility
Ford's Police Interceptor Utility is currently a prototype, and the automaker is still refining the vehicle for a scheduled 2012 model-year release. Ford is releasing the special-service vehicle based on the Ford Explorer, which was relaunched for civilians in 2011. However, this pursuit-rated utility has been specially designed for law enforcement. It will be built in Chicago and is equipped with a 3.5-liter V-6 engine rated to deliver at least 280 hp.

TASER X2 ECD
TASER has unveiled its double-barreled X2 electronic control device (ECD) that offers follow-up shot capability for initial missed shots. It also includes dual lasers for improved accuracy, an enhanced power magazine enabling more than 500 firings, and a warning arc to help keep conflicts from escalating.
