LEO Fatalities Plummet 41 Percent During First Six Months of 2008
After an unexpected surge in 2007, the number of law enforcement officers killed in the United States plummeted 41 percent during the first six months of this year, reaching the lowest level in more than four decades, the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund (NLEOMF) and Concerns of Police Survivors (C.O.P.S.) have announced.

Early Wednesday morning, while on a seemingly routine assignment on patrol alone, Chicago Police Officer Richard Francis was shot and killed in a struggle with a woman who had caused a disturbance with a CTA bus passenger less than a block from his police station, police said.

A SWAT team called to a standoff at a southeast Dallas home early Thursday freed three children from inside and arrested two assault suspects. Detectives arrived in the 8700 block of Slay Street in Pleasant Grove about 4:35 a.m. to serve three felony warrants at the house. They saw movement inside, but no one answered the door

Chicago Mayor Slams Supreme Court's Second Amendment Ruling
Mayor Richard Daley of Chicago has called the Supreme Court's overturning of the Washington D.C. gun ban "a very frightening decision" and vowed to fight vigorously any challenges to Chicago's ban. The mayor, speaking at a Navy Pier event yesterday, said he was sure mayors nationwide, who carry the burden of keeping cities safe, will be outraged by the decision.
