IL Officers Shot at Traffic Stop, Suspect Killed

When the officers tried to remove the driver from the vehicle, he produced a handgun and opened fire, police say.

Decatur, IL, Police Chief Shane Brandel says two of his officers were wounded, and a suspect was killed after a shootout during a traffic stop early Wednesday morning.

Police told WANDTV the driver was ordered to show his hands and refused to comply. Then one officer saw what was believed to be a handgun in the vehicle near the driver.

When the officers tried to remove the driver from the vehicle, he produced a handgun and opened fire, police say.

One Decatur Police Officer was hit multiple times and a second Decatur Police Officer was hit one time. The driver shot multiple times when the officers returned fire, police say.

The wounded officers were transported to the hospital by other police officers on scene. One officer is in stable condition. The other officer is in serious, but stable condition after surgery.
