A Washington, DC, library police officer was shot and killed during expandable baton training Thursday afternoon. A retired DC Metro Police lieutenant, who was conducting the training, was charged with involuntary manslaughter over the shooting.
Police responded to the Anacostia Neighborhood Library at 3:32 p.m.
Once at the scene, officers found a woman who was unconscious and not breathing. Police say she was taken to an area hospital, and later pronounced dead. Police identified the victim as Maurica Manyan, 25, of Indian Head, Maryland, Fox 5 reports.
Police say that at the end of the training, Retired DC Metro Lieutenant Jesse Porter, 58, fired a shot and struck the special officer. Investigators did not indicate, however, what led up to that shot being fired.
DC library police perform security and some police duties at the libraries. They are classified as special police officers.
