Puerto Rico Officer Killed at Traffic Stop

The man suddenly turned around and opened fire on Sergeant GarcĂ­a-Torres, striking him in the head. Sergeant GarcĂ­a-Torres was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Sergeant Erasmo GarcĂ­a-Torres of the Puerto Rico Police Department was shot and killed while conducting a traffic stop June 10 in the city of Ponce.

The Officer Down Memorial Page reports the driver started to walk away during the stop and Sergeant GarcĂ­a-Torres began to follow him. The man suddenly turned around and opened fire on Sergeant GarcĂ­a-Torres, striking him in the head. Sergeant GarcĂ­a-Torres was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The man who shot him was arrested a short time later and charged with murder.

Sergeant GarcĂ­a-Torres, 50, served with the Puerto Rico Police Department for 30 years and was posthumously promoted to sergeant. He is survived by four sons.
