An officer with the Morgantown (WV) Police Department who was seen on a video posted to social media shooting a possum was "putting it out of its misery," after it had been hit by a car and severely injured.

According to WTOP Radio, Morgantown Police Department spokesman Andrew Stacy said that the officer—whose name has not been released—found the animal mortally wounded and used a piece of wood to push it from the road to a grassy area where he shot it once with his service weapon.

Stacy added, "You see the video without any context behind it and say, ‘What is going on?’ but the reality is that he was trying to help the animal and not have it suffer anymore."
