An officer with the Phoenix Police Department was seen retreating around her patrol vehicle and attempting to create distance between herself and a knife-wielding man before she was forced to fire her service weapon in her own defense.

According to NBC News, the incident was captured on cell phone video shared on social media by Phoenix City Councilman Sal DiCiccio.

The video confirms the agency's account of the incident in which the knife-wielding subject—whose name has not been released—rapidly approached the officer while making verbal threats.

The incident began as the officer responded to a call for service at a local supermarket as staff and customers were concerned about the man bearing the edged weapon and making threats.

The officer was reportedly not harmed. Charges against the suspect are pending.
