An officer with the San Diego Police Department is being heralded as a hero for saving two toddlers from a vehicle that was driven by their father over a cliff near the Coronado Bridge on Saturday morning.
According to KFI Radio, Officer Jonathan Wiese received a call about the suicidal man and quickly drove to the scene, where he witnessed the suspect vehicle drive off the 30-foot cliff at a high rate of speed.
Wiese later said that his heart sank and thought to himself, "Oh my God. What the heck? Please tell me the kids weren't in there. Please tell me he dropped them off,” Wiese said.
"Please tell me the girls weren't in the car," Wiese said.
Wiese affixed to himself a special K-9 leash and with the aid of other officers perched on the cliff, rappelled down and was able to rescue both of the girls as well as the father from the truck that laid upside-down in the ocean.
All three involved in the wreck are expected to recover.
Officials have not said what charges the father will face.
