A gunman reportedly shot an off-duty officer with the Nashville (TN) Police Department as the officer was walking his dog on Thursday evening.

According to The Tennesean, police say the subject—identified as 48-year-old William Johnson Jr.—fled the scene of the shooting in a car but was later located by officers, and a vehicle pursuit ensued.

Following the pursuit, Osmond reportedly opened fire on officers, three of whom then returned fire, fatally wounding the gunman.

Tennessee Bureau of Investigation spokesman Josh DeVine told reporters that the agency is leading the investigation into Johnson's death but was not handling the earlier shooting that wounded off-duty Officer Darrell Osment.

Osment is now listed in stable condition at a nearby hospital.
