An officer with the Tarpon Springs (FL) Police Department who reportedly threatened to "shoot up" his department if he didn't get the job he wanted has resigned from the agency, officials said.

According to Fox News, Officer Steve Bergren later said he was only joking when he commented that he would commit a mass shooting at the department, but a fellow detective reportedly said that the comments made "hairs on the back of his neck stand up," according to Police Maj. Jeffrey Young.

Bergren wrote in a letter of apology to the chief of police, "I never imagined when the statement was made that it would be perceived ... as a potential threat to our shared workplace."
