An officer with the North Aurora (IL) Police Department was forced to shoot and kill a man who refused to comply with commands to drop a handgun he was holding Wednesday, according to a press release.

According to the Kane County Chronicle, a 54-year-old man—whose name has not yet been disclosed—had threatened to harm another person and made suicidal statements. Officers responded and attempted to get the man to disarm himself, but the man exited the vehicle he was in and walked away while holding the handgun.

After failing to comply with commands to drop the weapon, an officer fired a single shot, striking the man, police say.

Officers then performed first aid until paramedics arrived and transported the gunman to a nearby hospital where he later died, according to the press release.
