An officer with the Largo (FL) Police Department is being lauded for ensuring that the head of an elderly woman trapped in a sinking vehicle remained above water until he was able to pull the woman from the car.

Officer Jonathan DePierre was the first on the scene of the incident in which a vehicle was reported to be sinking in a lake.

The department said in a Facebook post that DePierre "entered the five-foot-deep water and helped to hold the elderly female driver's head above water until he was able to free her from the car. Substantial aid was rendered by good Samaritans who tried to keep the car from submerging further. The victim was transported to the hospital with minor injuries."
