An Anchorage police dog was stabbed multiple times with a pocket knife while pursuing a suspect in East Anchorage early Saturday morning, reports the Anchorage Daily News.

The dog, an 8-year-old Belgian Malinois named MP, underwent emergency surgery for three stab wounds and is expected to survive, police spokeswoman Jennifer Castro said. The dog was recovering at a local animal hospital Saturday.

The dog, MP, and his trainer, Anchorage PD officer Nathan Keays, ran after a man who had allegedly been attacking another person with a machete and ran from police. In an alleyway, MP bit the suspect in the hand. The suspect then pulled out a pocket knife and hit and stabbed the dog. Officers used a TASER to subdue the man and take him into custody. Keays sustained minor injuries.
